About Us

Introduction to Kakuma Empowerment Program.

Empowering Young People Through Education.

Who We Are

KEP is a refugee-led, education-focused organization committed to supporting refugee youth across Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement who face barriers to education.

We recognize that education can be a powerful pathway to opportunity, particularly for young people whose educational journeys have been disrupted by displacement and difficult circumstances.

Our Beginning

KEP was founded in 2021 by Akon Juach Arok after an encounter with a refugee student who was caned for not having an exercise book. A follow-up conversation revealed a difficult reality many refugee students face: choosing between basic school supplies and putting food on the table.

Moved by the students’ experiences, Akon began exploring ways to support students in Kakuma and shared the idea with friends and colleagues, inviting them to hear their thoughts and consider supporting its development. Among those who believed in the vision and supported its early development were Ajah Malual Maluk, Nhial Magot Chol, Arni Muras, Joseph Thon Machar, Angok Ayuen Angok, Nyuon Nhial Jongkuch, Meshake Stephen Lokanjo, and Grace Nyibol Kuol.

What started with one student and one conversation has grown into a community. Today, KEP is supported by a growing team of volunteers who contribute across our programs and share a commitment to expanding educational opportunities for refugee youth.

Our Vision
A Visionary Generation of Refugee Youth

We envision a generation of  young people who are educated, confident, and empowered to realize their potential, pursue their aspirations, and contribute positively to their communities.

Our Mission
Empowering Through Education and Mentorship

Our mission is to empower refugee youth through education and mentorship by creating inclusive and equitable opportunities for all young people to learn, grow, and pursue their aspirations.
