Tutoring Program

Targeted Academic Support for Student Success

TUTORING PROGRAM

Our tutoring program provides targeted academic support and enrichment to refugee youth, asylum seekers, and students from the host community, with a particular focus on Grades 11 and 12 students preparing for their final examinations.

Classes are held every Saturday at Kakuma Refugee Secondary School during the school term and more intensively during the April and August holidays, when students have additional time to strengthen areas in which they face academic challenges.

Academic Support

Our academic support focuses primarily on English and Kiswahili, developing students’ comprehension, writing, and effective communication skills. We also provide in-depth instruction in Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics to reinforce key concepts and address curriculum-specific challenges.

Student-Centred Learning

We use a participatory and student-centered approach that encourages respectful interaction, discussion, and collaborative problem-solving rather than relying solely on traditional teaching methods. We also go beyond the school syllabus by incorporating life skills and practical knowledge that contribute to students’ confidence, resilience, and overall development.

Monitoring Progress

To ensure that our teaching responds to students’ actual needs, we collect feedback at the end of each term and use it to identify areas requiring greater attention during holiday sessions. Students complete assessments during the long holidays, allowing us to evaluate their understanding and measure their academic progress.

Recognising Achievement

We maintain records of attendance, examination results, annual academic performance, and feedback from students and tutors to monitor progress, evaluate the program, and report to stakeholders and funding partners. We also recognize top-performing and most-improved students, celebrating their achievements and motivating other refugee youth to pursue their education with confidence and determination.

Our Tutors

Our tutors are recruited for their strong academic performance, teaching ability, and demonstrated commitment to giving back to the community.

Many are high school graduates who have subsequently been employed as teachers within the camp’s secondary education system, bringing both subject knowledge and practical teaching experience to the program.
